I couldn’t agree more with Rob Fahey’s editorial at GamesIndustry.biz titled Massive Wars. Fahey implies that attempting to take on Activision/Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is a “fools errand.” Fahey goes into how, with the MMO market, publishers and their developers are looking at toppling World of Warcraft– the obvious king of the MMO hill with its massive subscription rate.
Publishers should be looking at ways to find subscribers while avoiding taking on World of Warcraft. Players have too much invested into the juggernaut MMO, and that, while we’ll see World of Warcraft players try out new MMOs for a month or two, they won’t stay because of this investment.
All Blizzard has to do is push out more content to keep things fresh, as they have, and as they will. Blizzard has all the momentum, and that is why attempting to take them on is futile. When World of Warcraft is eventually toppled, and it will happen, the shift will occur naturally, gradually. Publishers should be attempting to find a niche market instead of tackling the current kind head on.
